There were many good things about being the flying professor, not the least of which was that Viktor got to spend all of his time outside. He knew that when winter came some students wouldn't enjoy that aspect of his class, but Viktor was quite a bit sturdier than most of them, at least when it came to his ability to withstand cold weather, so he wasn't particularly worried by the coming cold. He was slightly more worried by letting them watch him fly. Anyone who had seen him fly in his prime knew that his injury had changed his flying style significantly. He was no longer graceful or light. He was still a good flier, of course, but he wasn't Viktor Krum. Oh well. Viktor had tried his best not to let his apprehensions keep him from doing what he still loved to do, so that day, he was walking onto the pitch not with the intentions of teaching a lesson, but of flying for himself.

The Gryffindor girl said that she wasn’t good at tunnel vision, and Viktor nodded slowly. Focus had always been his specialty, but he could understand why Seeking wouldn’t be the favorite of some people. It was a strain on the eyes, and on the body. Even if he hadn’t had his injury, Viktor probably would have been passé as a Seeker in five years, maybe ten. Chasers weren’t much better, but they could live longer. “That can be very dangerous.” He warned. There were still bad people in the world, and while he liked withholding judgement, trusting implicitly could also be dangerous. “I vould not say I made many friends in the first place.” Viktor said, attempting a causal shrug. Karkaroff had been extremely possessive of him, and that, combined with his own natural tendency to distrust, had been detrimental to his ability to fraternize with Hogwarts students. “But the ones I have are still students. It vould not be…appropriate.” He said quietly. He was all about propriety when it came to his relationships with students that had been his friends.

Hermione was looking at his legs. Of course. Everyone seemed to look at his legs anymore, as if they couldn’t quite imagine that Viktor Krum would ever have to limp, and they needed the visual evidence that it was the truth. Hermione was surprised to see him, too, and Viktor gave her a crooked smile at that. He had wanted to tell her before, but it there hadn’t been a way to do it, other than writing a letter. And writing a letter to announce something like that felt wrong. “It has been.” Viktor agreed when Hermione said it had been too long. He tensed a little when she wrapped her arms around him, but returned the hug. This wasn’t appropriate for a student-teacher relationship, but no one was there. It was fine. She apologized for not writing, and Viktor smiled. “You have had other things to do. Like save the vorld.” Harry Potter was competent, but nothing in comparison with Hermione. “Vhy did you come back?” He asked. She could have left school forever, and yet…she was here.

His call had been enough to stop Hermione, which Viktor hadn’t expected. It was helpful, though, seeing as he had no hope of catching up to her otherwise, with the bum leg and all. He limped the last few meters between them, stopping so there was still a comfortable distance between them. It was the distance that was appropriate between strangers, though, and was too distant for friends. “I –” He began, not entirely sure how that statement was supposed to end. “It is going vell, yes.” He corrected himself. “I vas surprised to see you here.” Vitkor said after a moment more of contemplation. He had thought that Hermione had graduated the year previous, and was only corrected in that notion when he expressed it to one of the other professors, who had told him that she had skipped the year previous, presumably to be with Harry Potter. It explained why she hadn’t written, at least.

Well, this girl was certainly not sparing with her words, Viktor thought. It was fortunate for him that he had already spent a year in the United Kingdom. Even though that had been four year ago now, the positive affect his year at Hogwarts had on his English speaking ability was permanent, and he was more or less able to keep up with what the girl was saying. “Seeker is also good for the ones who are fast.” Viktor said with a smile. He would know – he used to be one of the fastest. With emphasis on ‘used to be’. “Thank you for your encouragement.” He said. Viktor wondered briefly if all of the students at Hogwarts were nice, or if he had just been fortunate, both before and now. “I like a person who knows vhen to vithhold judgement.” He added. Too often people jumped to conclusions, which Viktor knew he could be guilty of, as well. Watching and waiting always seemed to work better in the end.

When Viktor had first been at Hogwarts, there had not been as much time as he had wished to explore. Karkaroff had always been breathing down his neck, making sure that his precious Champion wasn’t injured. As if a promenade on the Hogwarts grounds could injure him. Now, perhaps, since he had a bum leg, but that wouldn’t be injuring him so much as exacerbating a condition that already existed. Now that he had a chance to explore the castle – the whole castle, not just the parts that were pretty or good to show to guests – and the grounds, Viktor was taking every chance he got to look everywhere. He knew it probably would have been quicker, and by all accounts easier, to observe the grounds from his broom, and since he was a flying instructor he’d have a legitimate excuse for flying around without care, but Viktor was forcing himself to walk more. His cane still felt awkward in his hand, and he needed to get used to it eventually. This was just another exercise in adjusting. As he was walking along the path, though, Viktor recognized a familiar head of hair on the path ahead of him. “Hermione!” He called. He winced a little after the name was out of his mouth. Was he allowed to call students by their first names? There had to be an exception for students he had known before he was a teacher, Viktor thought.

The girl responded to his compliment more enthusiastically than Viktor had anticipated. When a professor complimented him, he had always assumed that it was because they had wanted something from him, especially when he grew older and it was obvious that he was going to be rich and successful and other amazing things. But this girl had nothing to gain from him, not anymore, nor did he have anything to gain from her. He didn’t know who she was, so how could he gain anything? Viktor took a deep breath to refocus himself on the conversation he was having. It had been a while since he had had to use English at this rigorous of a level – that was, spoken conversationally, with colloquialisms thrown in. “Gryffindor team.” He repeated. Viktor was half-tempted to ask her if she knew of Hermione Granger, but that seemed silly, and a little desperate. Not proper of a professor. “Vhat position do you play?” He asked her curiously. Perhaps she was a prospective Seeker, like he had been, all those years ago. “Teaching is hard, yes. But I am hopeful I can do better.” He said with a winning smile. “Do you have any suggestions?” Viktor asked. A little student feedback was never a bad thing.

It was the first day as a professor at Hogwarts, and Viktor had just finished teaching his first class of the day. The thing about teaching was that Viktor had absolutely no idea if he was doing well or not. The kids would be happy either way, if only because he was a professional Quidditch player and they were in awe of him. They hadn’t asked as many questions about why he was there, which was a good thing, since Viktor didn’t trust himself not to snap at someone if they pushed him too far in that regard.
There had been one student that had been particularly impressive in her flying, and Viktor was pleased to see that she was still on the pitch despite the fact that class had ended a few minutes ago. Viktor approached the girl with an easy smile on his face, leaning slightly on his cane as he limped his way over to her. “You did very vell today." He told her quietly. That was what teachers were supposed to do, right? Offer encouragement?

viktor anastasiy desislav krum i fell in love with a girl who fell in love with the world age: twenty two date of birth: 26 june 1976 gender: male sexuality: hetero house: durmstrang, but would have been slytherin occupation: flying professor at hogwarts wand: 10.25 inches, hornbeam, dragon heartstring
patronus: peregrine falcon. he remembers dancing at the yule ball with hermione granger when he was a triwizard champion. boggart: literally turns into a mirror copy of him. this is due to being imperiused during the final task of the triwizard tournament; viktor knows that he can be deadly, and he's afraid of losing control and the damage he can do. special ability: none playby: andre hamann personality: viktor can often seem surly or withdrawn, especially when talking with people he doesn’t know. he doesn’t like letting people close to him, partially because, growing up in bulgaria, he was never sure who was a practitioner of the dark arts and who was not. he didn’t – and still doesn’t – want to get close to people who might be bad for him. the simple solution: don’t get close to anyone at all. sadly, that doesn’t always work for viktor, and when he does let someone in and get to know them, he tends to get attached extremely quickly. all of the walls come down, and viktor is no longer surly or withdrawn – he’s enthusiastic and charismatic, like someone might expect of a former professional sports player. even though he can be rather moody, viktor is exceedingly polite to those in positions of power over him. he can be snide to them behind their backs, of course, but to their faces he is nothing less than the epitome of politeness. viktor also extends this courtesy to people who have earned his respect, normally through extreme physical or intellectual feats. it is normally the people that viktor first respects that then earn his trust and friendship. another particular noticeable part of viktor’s personality is his tendency to anger quickly. if people do something to offend him or disparage the people that he cares for, viktor can be…scary. he doesn’t think before he acts when he’s angered, and often relies on other people to talk him out of making poor decisions. he’s an excellent duelist and is unafraid to use that skill when he feels it’s warranted. his anger issue is something that viktor’s trying to work on, especially now that he’s a professor, but it’s an uphill battle. history: born in a small town in bulgaria, viktor krum did not think he would ever be anything special. his parents, both magical themselves, were of average talent and had average careers – his father working for the bulgarian ministry and his mother working as a magical seamstress. viktor knew from a young age that he would probably do something equally average – not that he thought any less of ministry workers or seamstresses, of course. after viktor rode a broom for the first time, though, all notions anyone had of viktor being average were gone. at the ripe young age of seven years old, viktor flew with the same skill and grace as players twice his age. his parents began saving for flying lessons for viktor, knowing that he could grow into something great. and great he did become. while most children his age had no idea what they were going to do when they graduated, viktor knew that he wanted to be a professional seeker. it did affect his studies, of course, since he already had his future spread in front of him, but viktor still did well in all of his classes, especially excelling in dueling. he hated his dark arts class due to the pain his family had suffered at the hands of the dark wizard grindewald, but grudgingly did the wok. eventually viktor could wait no longer to play quidditch professionally, and no one wants to wait. talent like that ought not to be wasted. viktor joined the bulgarian national team when he was in his sixth year at school, and helped the team go to the world cup. though the loss at the world cup was humiliating, viktor soon got another chance to prove that he was special. the triwizard tournament that occurred at hogwarts was viktor’s second chance at proving that he was great. even better, it proved that he was great beyond just his flying skills, since the goblet chose him for his worthiness and his ability to represent his school. viktor was proud of how he performed in the tournament despite the interference from forces larger than any of the champions could fathom. in one year, viktor failed on an international scale, found a girl he thought that he thought he could love forever, almost committed murder, saw the dead body of a boy he considered friend, and heard of the return of a dark lord. it was a lot to stomach, and viktor hated to admit that he returned to bulgaria because he was scared. he had a life there, but he was also afraid of what would happen to him if he stayed in britain. the next years saw him once again playing quidditch, though his team was just barely edged out of the world cup two years in a row. viktor felt awful being so focused on quidditch and his playing when there where people - friends, in fact - who were fighting for their lives in britain. he worried for them all, especially hermione, but he didn't want to make their lives any harder by having to constantly update him on their lives or assure them that they were okay. even worse, he feared that he would send the letters, and get responses, but that the responses would one day stop. one day after voldemort fell, in an off-season practice game, not even a match of significance, viktor fell off his broom. the way he felt injured his femur, and despite the best efforts of all of his healers, the bone never healed correctly. viktor’s professional quidditch career was over – he couldn’t fly as quickly with his inability to tuck his body as tightly against the broom. the way the bone healed has also condemned him to permanently limping. viktor is still adjusting to the huge change in his life’s course, but has found hope in his move to a new place and his acceptance of a new job. though viktor fears for a repeat of the awful year he had at hogwarts, he’s also hopeful that there will be some good change to come with the bad. --- alias: puck age: eighteen time zone: est other characters: none yet
