nymphadora evangeline tonks
if i fear for the selfish pain, it was worth it every time
age: twenty five
date of birth: 2 march, 1976
gender: female
sexuality: pan
house: hufflepuff
occupation: auror; head of the order of the phoenix
wand: 12.25 inches, rowan. phoenix feather.
patronus: wolf. she remembers the day she married remus lupin.boggart: it literally turns into the body of her husband, cradling the body of their son. tonks never thought she was meant for domestic life, but now that she has two people she loves so completely, she's terrified of them leaving her behind.playby: chloe norgaard
special ability: metamorphmagus. hereditary ability, but she fully mastered it (and was able to change her appearance on a whim) when she was around ten years old. tonks still has problems controlling her ability if she's emotionally wrung out, and occasionally her emotions do get the better of her and her hair and eyes change color without her intending them to change.personality: bubbly, happy, friendly – all of those are words that would describe tonks. she’s always been a happy-go-lucky sort of person, and even though that was dimmed a little in the war, tonks has bounced back relatively well. she’s trying to look for the good in all of the bad, just the way she always has. she tries to be sensitive people who can’t look on the bright side as easily, but sometimes her bubbliness can come off as insensitive.
tonks is a hufflepuff, through and through. this is most obviously evident in her steadfast loyalty. her loyalty is perhaps too easily given, and sometimes once she’d decided to follow someone, she can be a bit blinded by her need to be loyal and ignore their flaws, no matter how obvious. tonks’s loyalty is unique in the fact that there is no hierarchy to it – she is not more loyal to one person than she is to another. it’s all or nothing. when she’s asked to choose between her multiple loyalties, tonks goes with her gut. what she hopes to do, though, is not have conflicting loyalties in the first place.
while she’s a textbook hufflepuff, tonks is not what you’d expect from an auror. she’s a bit careless and definitely clumsier than is probably good for a law enforcement official. tonks can reign herself in when she remembers, and her focus is a lot better when she’s on-duty than when she’s not. she used to be quick to snap at people, but being married and taking on additional responsibilities in the order have both helped elongate her short temper.
history: the tonks family was already quite peculiar before nymphadora was added into it. a muggleborn marrying a woman from the house of black wasn’t a typical love story, and it didn’t get any more typical when nymphadora was added into the mix. her hair started changing colors mere hours after she was born, so that certainly added some variety to things. from a young age, she refused to answer to her given name, so her parents had to improvise. dora was the name they came up with to keep their child from being reduced to screaming fits every time her name was being called. other than those tantrums, though, dora was a good child. good, as long as her parents didn’t mind the broken vases or the tendency to approach strangers and start spouting off random facts to them.
when dora was eleven she received her hogwarts letter, as she had expected. she was placed into hufflepuff house, which was practically unheard of for anyone with black blood. dora didn’t much mind that, though, because from the moment she was sorted, she knew she belonged there. sometime in her first year, dora was also given the nickname of tonks, which seemed to fit her a lot better than nymphadora, or even dora, did. tonks thrived at school, and was an exceptional witch. it didn’t take her long to figure out what she wanted to do as a career, especially since several of her teachers suggested that she would make an excellent auror.
going through auror training was a grueling process, but tonks attacked it with zeal. she loved the work and she loved her mentors. most of all, she loved feeling like she made a difference in the world. tonks was particularly close to her mentor, alastor moody, and saw him as a sort of brother figure. she was considerably shaken when, in may of the year of the triwizard tournament, she found that mad-eye had been trapped in a trunk for an entire year. even more troubling was the fact that she hadn’t been able to tell that he was an imposter. tonks didn’t have time to worry too much, though, because voldemort had returned and there was much to do.
being a part of a secret organization as an agent of a hostile government was stressful but nothing that tonks couldn’t handle. what she actually couldn’t handle, though, was loving someone that she thought she would never be able to be with. she knew that she loved remus lupin practically from the moment that she met him, but everything felt like it wasn’t meant to be. tonks tried to ignore her feelings, and did that by throwing herself further into her work.
things got better. things got worse. dumbledore died, but she finally got to be with remus, got to marry him even. the world they were in was slowly spiraling downwards. not even slowly, though – alastor died. and that was what shook tonks. the man that had taught her everything she knew about everything was dead. he went the way he would’ve liked, tonks knew, fighting for a cause he believed in, but still… and in the midst of it all she was somehow expecting herself to bring a baby into a dark, dark world. the next nine months were terrifying, never knowing if harry was dead or alive, or if the dark lord would ever fall. tonks had her baby, and only a few weeks later, received notice that harry was at hogwarts. she rushed there for a battle, one that would change the fate of the world forever.
tonks should have died in that battle. she dueled her aunt, and was losing badly due to her recent pregnancy and childbirth and the fact that she had dueled many, many others before that point. fate intervened, though, sending a blasting jinx into the wall between them so that the ceiling caved in, cutting off their paths to each other. tonks was saved from a battle that she couldn’t have run away from and wouldn’t have walked away from.
in the summer that followed, she mourned. she mourned everything she hadn’t had time or energy to over the past year, and giving herself that time to grieve made all the difference to tonks. she was able to return to work from her maternity leave more or less the same person she had been when she left, just a little older and a little wiser – and, of course, a mother. tonks is hoping that she can use all of the suffering and pain she’s endured to make her a better person, and make the world a better place for the son that she loves so much.---
